Iran FM in Afghanistan for trilateral talks

Washington, 27 April (WashingtonTV)—Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki arrived in Kabul on Monday, to attend a trilateral meeting with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hassan Qashqavi, said that the meeting between was proposed so that “regional issues could be resolved with regional solutions,” reports the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The foreign minister [Mottaki] will follow-up on this matter and also pave the way for a summit of the leaders of the three countries,” Qashqavi added.

Mottaki, Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta and his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, are expected to discuss ways to combat terrorism and drug trafficking, and areas for developing trilateral cooperation, reports the conservative Fars news agency.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Kabul, Mottaki said that he would also meet and confer with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, reports Fars news.

Following his trip to Afghanistan, Mottaki will attend a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement [NAM], during an official two-day visit to Cuba on Thursday.
