Washington, 7 June (WashingtonTV)—Iran’s Central Bank announced on Sunday that the country’s inflation rate for the twelve months ending with the Iranian month of Ordibehest [21 May], fell to 23.6 percent.

The inflation rate dipped from 24.5 percent during the previous month, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

That economic indicator has been one of the biggest challenges facing the current government, with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s election rivals accusing the government of stoking inflation.

In a televised debate with reformist presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi on Saturday, Ahmadinejad said that inflation was actually 14 percent. His claim was dismissed by Karroubi, who cited the Central Bank’s statistics.

Inflation had peaked at 29 percent in September.
