US President Trump administration unveils order to prioritize and promote AI

US President Donald Trump is expected to very soon sigh an executive order aimed at stimulating the development of artificial intelligence (AI), the Verge reported.

Based on the order, federal agencies that conduct or fund R&D should prioritize AI R&D.

"I am eager to work with you on legislation to deliver new and important infrastructure investment, including investments in the cutting edge industries of the future", Trump said in a White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) press statement.

Trump also issued a national security memo on February 11, that gives his national security adviser, John Bolton, 120 days to "organize the development of an action plan to protect the United States advantage in AI and AI technology critical to United States economic and national security interests against strategic competitors and adversarial nations". However, while the goals are lofty, the details are vague.

Monday's order envisions regulatory guidance to ensure the technology is trustworthy, said the White House official.

The initiative aims to make sure the United States maintains its advantage in AI development and related areas, such as advanced manufacturing and quantum computing.

"The United States must foster public trust and confidence in AI technologies and protect civil liberties, privacy, and American values in their application in order to fully realize the potential of AI technologies for the American people", the executive order stated.

The American AI Initiative also asks agencies to prepare to assist workers whose jobs are impacted by artificial intelligence.

Funding: The government will direct federal agencies to "prioritize investments" in AI research and development, but there are no specifics yet regarding how much funding will be requested and who gets it. This action will help educate the AI R&D workforce our Nation needs to create and embrace new AI technologies.

It is vital for prosperity and security that the U.S. keeps its leadership position in development and implementation of AI technologies.

Mr Darrell West, head of the Brookings Institution's Center for Technology Innovation, said the White House move was "timely" but that it remained uncertain how it would be implemented without clear funding. Lastly, the US will foster worldwide collaboration for AI.

But so far, New Zealand is behind other countries in encouraging AI, and creating an ethical framework, Callaghan boss Victoria Crone says. In 2017, Beijing unveiled plans to establish a $150 billion domestic AI industry by 2030. The Chinese government has made a 10-fold increase in AI output a national priority for coming years, and many companies there are deploying machine-learning systems to update banking services, identify faces in crowds, and control drones.
