Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Phil Mickelson closes out victory in weather-delayed finish

  • Phil Mickelson closes in on fifth AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am win

"I've written down a goal of winning L.A. and I had an outside chance of winning this one - I had a very good chance of winning this one", Casey said.

Mickelson finished at 19-under 268, while Englishman Paul Casey (71) birdied the final hole for second place on 16-under. "But I wanted to try to finish tonight because I'm playing well".

It's his 44th career PGA Tour title, and fifth at Pebble Beach, tying Mark O'Meara for most in the event's history.

"I thanked Paul this morning for letting us finish in the morning", he told the Golf Channel, admitting that he had been in his "little bubble" and self-centered. Another feature of Pebble Beach is the scenic 17-Mile Drive that offers drivers and passengers views of the golf course, seascape and spectacular mansions.

The last time the final round was played on Monday was in 2000, when Tiger Woods rallied from a five-shot deficit to win his sixth consecutive PGA Tour start.

Casey said he didn't see why they should continue in the gathering darkness when they wouldn't be able to complete the round.

US PGA Tour officials suspended play for two hours when heavy rain, wind and even hail lashed California's Monterey Peninsula, with the postponement all but guaranteeing the final round will have to be completed on Monday.

"When guys get in their 40s, two things decline, their putting and their swing speed", said the new world number 17, who is now swinging at close to 120 miles per hour.

His brilliant play still shared the stage with weather that was weird even by Pebble standards.

Casey has a four-foot putt to save par on the 16th green when play resumes at 8am (4pm GMT) on Monday, while Stallings holds the clubhouse lead on 15 under after a six-under 66.

The Portrush man turns 39 in July and while he lost his PGA Tour card a year ago and must rely in invitations to fill out his schedule, he wants desperately to be at Royal Portrush for The Open.

After his 9-iron into a foot at No. 9 to get within one shot, Mickelson holed a 12-foot birdie on the 10th with a drive that hugged the right side of the fairway and likely would have bounced into the ocean if not for conditions so soft from rain that balls plugged where they landed.

Mickelson, however, doesn't think the win this week will give him an edge in June. Scott Piercy had a 15-foot putt that was slightly uphill, and he still ran it 7 feet by the hole and three-putted for bogey. Jason Day (68) and Kim Si-woo (68) were two strokes further back on 13-under 274.
