  • Venezuela's Maduro launches large-scale war game amid crisis

Incumbent Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, in turn, blasted the move as a coup staged by Washington and said he was severing diplomatic ties with the US.

Maduro has thus far used the military to block the aid from entering Venezuela, denying that the country is suffering a humanitarian crisis and saying the delivery of the shipments would be a prelude to a US-led military intervention.

"There are people responsible for this and the regime knows it".

While the United Nations, the government in Caracas and many Latin American and Caribbean countries are committed to dialogue, the Venezuelan opposition led by Juan Guaido -head of a parliament in contempt and who was self-declared "interim president"- rejects that option and seeks USA support. To do so, he will nearly certainly need the support of Venezuela's military.

This loyalty of the so-called Bolivarian National Armed Forces (BNAF) to the government would be the main obstacle to undoing what Guaido has called Maduro's "usurpation" of the presidency, and would also be the obstacle to him assuming official interim presidency of the country.

Guaido has offered amnesty for any members of the armed forces who disavows Maduro - but the military leadership still publicly backs the president.

Maduro's administration argues that the United States is trying to throw his country into chaos with aid.

"It's not help and it's not humanitarian", he said to cheers from roughly 1,000 Maduro supporters, including civilians and soldiers.

"They are warmongering in order to take over Venezuela", he told BBC.

The large-scale military exercise, which is being held in the country's 200-year history, will continue until February 15.

Venezuela's financial accountability authority announced a probe into Guaido's income, saying he had "allegedly. received money from worldwide and national bodies without any justification".

"We are a pacifist people as long as no one messes with us, that Donald Trump does not threaten us", Maduro said.
