House Dem Leaders: Omar Should 'Immediately Apologize' for 'Tropes'

  • Newly-elected US lawmakers Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib made their debut in the House of Representatives openly declaring their support for a boycott of Israel

When Chelsea Clinton appeared to criticize her comments Monday, Omar tweeted, "Chelsea - I would be happy to talk".

Omar has refused to apologize for the message and instead has repeatedly attacked Israel in recent interviews and statements while largely ignoring the plight of Muslim women across much of the Middle East.

"We condemn these remarks and we call upon Congresswoman Omar to immediately apologise for these hurtful comments".

Omar shared Greenwald's tweet with the comment, "It's all about the Benjamins baby", a reference to a popular mid-1990s rap song by Puff Daddy in which "Benjamins" is slang for $100 bills.

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar on Sunday sparked criticism and charges of anti-Semitism by suggesting Republican advocacy for Israel was a matter of money. "It's gone on too long and we must be willing to address it", Omar said.

Elaine Luria of Virginia and Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey on Monday published a letter urging House leaders to "unite against anti-Semitism and hateful tropes and stereotypes".

"Good that some Dems have condemned the disgraceful anti-Semitic remarks of Rep. Omar-but their words are empty unless Dem leaders remove her from the Foreign Affairs Committee", Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the second-ranking House Republican, said on Twitter.

The statement, which also touted the lawmakers' support for Israel, did not say whether any further action against Omar would be taken. Minnesota Republican Party Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan called on Minnesota Democrats, including Sen.

Omar apologized in a threaded tweet beginning here.

Pelosi tweeted she had spoken to Omar on Monday, and said the two "agreed that we must use this moment to move forward as we reject anti-Semitism in all forms".

Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Elaine Luria are gathering signatures on a letter asking Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer and other senior Democrats to confront Omar and Representative Rashida Tlaib, also a new congresswoman from MI, by "reiterating our rejection of anti-Semitism and our continued support for the State of Israel".

Fellow freshman Democratic Rep. Max Rose of NY called the comments "deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself", according to Politico. Implying that Americans support Israel because of money alone is offensive enough.

Omar's mea culpa followed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's call that the freshman Democrat immediately apologize for the tweets.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle know the importance of giving speeches at AIPAC's annual conference, particularly if they are considering a presidential run, as the group will encourage its members to support pro-Israel candidates and put candidates in touch with big donors.

Anthony Brindisi, who also narrowly won his NY swing district, called Omar's comments "disgraceful and blatantly anti-Semitic". Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., for their support of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against the Israeli government.
