  • A note sent to Steven Goff by Frank Robinson when Goff was 10 years old

Robinson was a first-ballot Hall of Famer, being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

After winning Most Valuable Player awards in both U.S. leagues - the only player in history to do so - he went on to manage Cleveland in 1975.

Robinson and Gibson both had the ability to hold a friendly conversation with opponents and ask how they were doing, Horton says.

"[His] résumé in our game is without parallel, a trailblazer in every sense, whose impact spanned generations", MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement posted to the league's website. Those attributes allowed him to finish his playing days with 586 home runs - fourth-most ever at the time and now 10th on the all-time list. In 1966 he won Major League Player of the Year, the American League Triple Crown and the AL Babe Ruth Award, as well as being named both the AL and World Series MVP.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss of our friend, colleague and legend, who worked in our game for more than 60 years".

What people said about him: "Frank Robinson and I were more than baseball buddies. Baseball will miss a tremendous human being", Aaron said on Twitter.

After a 10-year stay with the Reds that included a 1956 Rookie of the Year award, the 1961 MVP and a Gold Glove, the 30-year-old Robinson was traded by Cincinnati to Baltimore ahead of the 1966 season.

Known for his elite talent and intense demeanor, Robinson became a central figure in advancing Major League Baseball's integration of black players after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. In the first inning, he homered off Doc Medich and the crowd went insane, cheering the whole April afternoon as Cleveland beat the Yankees.

Over his career, he coached the Baltimore Orioles, the San Francisco Giants and Montreal. He returned to managing with the Montreal Expos in 2002 and followed the franchise to Washington D.C., where he managed the Nationals through the 2006 season.

Later, Robinson spent several years working as an executive for Major League Baseball. If it's any kind of baseball laurel, Frank Robinson probably won it.

Born in Beaumont, Texas, Robinson was raised in west Oakland where he attended McClymonds High School along with future NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell. The Orioles not only won the championship, but they swept the favored Los Angeles Dodgers in four games, and no player has captured the triple crown of baseball since Robinson's prodigious 1966 season.

After his career in the dugout, Robinson filled a variety of roles with the league and all the while tirelessly advocated for more opportunities for African-Americans in baseball.

Frank Robinson passed away at age 83, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

In 1989, the Orioles were a surprising contender and finished second in the AL East, winning 85 games. He's rightly remembered as one of the most feared right-handed batters in baseball history, and he's one of just 21 position players in MLB history to have a WAR of 100 or more.
