  • Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro attends a gathering in support of his government in Caracas

But according to Al Jazeera, the Colombian government has said the supplies shown to the press on Friday will only be distributed inside Venezuela, meaning they would have to break through a blockade put up by the Venezuelan military to prevent the passage of both civilian and military vehicles.

"I am sure that Moscow and Beijing know the situation in Venezuela really well: Maduro doesn't have the popular support and he can't stabilize the economy, which produced the world's largest inflation of two million percent".

Maduro also said that if the USA really wanted to help, it would instead lift the over $10 million in sanctions that have been imposed on Maduro's regime, calling it a robbery of money belonging to the Venezuelan people. Simultaneously, President Donald Trump's administration has been urging Venezuelan officers to defect and support the opposition's claim to power.

And he said a first attempt to bring in the aid should be made next week.

The aid consisted of locally bought food products, and nutritional supplements and medical kits flown in from the United States and Indonesia, according to the embassy.

Guaido is trying to bring in food and medicine from the USA but supplies are stuck in warehouses in Colombia as the Venezuelan military has blocked their entry. However, to go as far as choosing for the people in that country their new leader and calling the un-elected opposition leader Guaido the interim president is simply untenable and is going too far in the wrong direction.

"This is a macabre game: we squeeze them by the neck and make them ask for crumbs".

On Thursday, the International Contact Group on Venezuela, said it would be sending a mission to the country to help provide humanitarian aid.

The US, EU and many Latin American countries branded it a fraud as prominent opposition leaders were unable to stand after being exiled, jailed or barred.

Consultants Eurasia Group said on Thursday that Maduro's traditonal allies Russian Federation and China are "unlikely to lend (him) meaningful support", reinforcing its view that the socialist leader "will be unable to sustain his regime".

A number of Venezuelan leaders have appealed to the military to allow the relief supplies into the country, but those calls have been rejected by the country's embattled president, who has the support of the army.

Speaking in its inaugural meeting in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, the EU-backed International Contact Group on Venezuela said overly forceful intervention could aggravate the crisis in the country.

Maduro, who last weekend rejected an European Union ultimatum to organise snap presidential elections, fumed: "You don't listen to the truth in Venezuela".

The contact group seeks a solution to Venezuela's political and economic crisis through dialogue and new presidential elections.

On Friday, the Supreme Court asked the attorney general's office to investigate alleged "criminal" conduct by Guaido and the legislature over the "usurpation of functions" that correspond to Maduro.
