Trump says House intel probe has no basis

  • Trump calls for an end to investigations of his administration

"The committee also plans to release to the public all investigation transcripts, as it is committed to providing the American public with greater transparency and insight into Russia's operations and the US government's response", Schiff said after the Intelligence Committee met today.

"It's called presidential harassment", Trump said, before claiming it "hurts" the country. The committee closed the probe in March 2018, back when Republicans controlled the House of Representatives and the committee, declaring it had found "no evidence of collusion, coordination or conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russians".

Trump's former fixer and personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and a longtime adviser, Roger Stone, have been charged with lying to the panel.

Schiff also confirmed that closed-door testimony by Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer and fixer, has been delayed to February 28 but didn't comment on why.

Schiff said the investigation, which could involve additional congressional committees, would "allow us to investigate any credible allegation that financial interests or other interests are driving decision-making of the President or anyone in the administration".

Schiff said that while special counsel Robert Mueller continues his investigation into the episode, the intelligence committee "must fulfill its responsibility to provide the American people with a comprehensive accounting of what happened, and what the United States must do to protect itself from future interference and malign influence operations".

The intelligence panel's new chairman, California Rep. Adam Schiff, had long said that sending Mueller the transcripts from the probe into Russian election interference would be one of his first actions.

Stone pleaded not guilty to charges last month that he lied to the House panel about his discussions during the 2016 election about WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group that released thousands of emails stolen from Democrats.

The committee had already voted to release most of the transcripts to the public, but they are still being reviewed by the intelligence community for classified information.

Cohen was scheduled to speak with the committee on Thursday. Among those whose transcripts would be sent are Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, and former Trump strategist Stephen Bannon.

In the previous Congress, Schiff tried to send the unredacted transcripts to Mueller, but was stifled by Republicans, who said that Mueller's office had not requested them, CNN noted. There are dozens of other transcripts of interviews with former Obama administration officials and Trump associates.

"That was a threat", Pelosi told reporters after a Democratic Caucus meeting.

In addition to moving forward with continuing the Russian Federation probe, the Committee voted to release transcripts for private Committee testimony that took place during the last Congress.
