Maroon 5 started off strong with their classic hits "Harder to Breathe" and "This Love", then had Travis Scott join them and pay homage to Spongebob Squarepants' "Sweet Victory".

There were multiple indications that this would happen.

(L-R) Jesse Charmichael, Adam Levine and Stone Gossard of Maroon 5 perform at I Am The Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell at the Forum on January 16, 2019 in Inglewood, California. Around that same time, the Twitter account for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is hosting this year's game, tweeted a SpongeBob GIF.

While some performers declined participation in the Super Bowl, Knight said she hoped her anthem would unite people.

BBC - "Maroon 5's Super Bowl show fails to catch fire".

Cardi B says she received an offer to perform at the Super Bowl, but struggled with the decision to turn down the lucrative opportunity in support of ex-NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

Perhaps spurred by Scott's donation, Maroon 5 also announced this week that they would make a $500,000 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in partnership with Interscope Records and the NFL.

But it looks like the biggest star of the Halftime Show wasn't a person at all, but a sponge.

A third commentator said: "Absolutely screaming that Big Boi and Travis Scott were literally on stage for five seconds".

Compared to the energy bands like The Rolling Stones have brought to the Super Bowl stage in previous years and the incredible production values musicians like Lady Gaga have put forth, Maroon 5 was just ... boring. "We're going to keep doing what we're doing, hopefully without becoming politicians".

As you know by now, the band took over the field at the Super Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia earlier tonight but it seems like fans were more excited over a possible Spongebob appearance at the big event. Together with Scott, the National Football League is making a $500,000 donation to Dream Corps, an organizing focused on finding solutions for social change, founded by political commentator Van Jones.
