"She knows that you need a barrier", he said.

"But if you don't have it - human trafficking, just as an example".

It comes after he declared in a CBS Face the Nation interview that aired Sunday morning that he won't rule out a second government shutdown on February 15 if negotiators don't offer a border security plan that includes funding for his border wall.

Trump has said he has to have a wall for border security. Democrats argue that there is no national emergency at the border and they blast Trump's proposed wall as an antiquated and ineffective solution to stem the flow of undocumented immigrants and narcotics crossing through the southern border.

"We are doing it regardless", he said Friday, Politico reports.

President Donald Trump used his pre-Super Bowl interview to send mixed signals about his next move in his border wall standoff with Democratic leaders and to blast Speaker Nancy Pelosi as "very bad for our country".

"I don't take anything off the table. When you see today what's going on, people that aren't willing to do what they have to do, and they know what they have to do, they're doing the country a tremendous disservice". Trump has agreed to open the government for three weeks, until February 15, to allow negotiations with Democrats after a 35-day partial government shutdown, the longest in United States history.

The government entered into a partial shutdown in December over a stand-off between Trump and his opponents in the Democratic Party, who refused to pass legislation giving the president $US5.7 billion ($A7.9 billion) to construct sections of a wall on the border with Mexico.

'This really is an invasion of our country by human traffickers. Human trafficking. And we're going to have a strong border. You need a wall. "She wanted to win a political point. It's like in a business, we have money on hand, and we're building, I would say we have a hundred and fifteen miles of wall, maybe a little bit more than that very shortly".

Trump once again called a congressional conference committee debating border security a "waste of time" and said his administration was proceeding with the construction of 115 miles of wall on the border with Mexico using money "on hand". "I think the Democrats don't want border security".

Pelosi held firm on her stance for no border wall funding and, after the longest shutdown in American history, Trump caved and reopened the government for three weeks while negotiations on border security funding continue.
