May will seek 'pragmatic' solution to Brexit deal in Brussels

  • Maas: Exit from Brexit 'extremely unlikely'

May, writing in The Sunday Telegraph newspaper, shed little light on how she meant to solve the issue that has provoked most opposition from her lawmakers, post-Brexit arrangements for the border between the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Separately, May's office rejected a report in the Mail on Sunday newspaper that her advisors were considering an early election on June 6 if she got a Brexit deal through parliament.

"I am now confident there is a route that can secure a majority in the House of Commons for leaving the European Union with a deal", she wrote.

With less than two months until Britain is due to leave the bloc on March 29, concerns are growing over the risk of a disorderly "no deal" exit.

"It's why when I return to Brussels I will be battling for Britain and Northern Ireland, I will be armed with a fresh mandate, new ideas and a renewed determination to agree a pragmatic solution that delivers the Brexit the British people voted for, while ensuring there is no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland", May added.

In an article for the Sunday Times, Simon Coveney, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, wrote: "The EU will not renegotiate the withdrawal agreement and there will be no withdrawal agreement without the backstop".

May said opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn "also believes the potential indefinite nature of the backstop is an issue", and that the European Union has "already accepted the principle of "alternative arrangements" superseding the backstop should it ever be required".

Nissan has cancelled plans to make its X-Trail SUV in the United Kingdom - a sharp blow to Brexit supporters, who had fought to have the model built in northern England.

"If I return to Brussels, I will fight for great Britain and Northern Ireland", wrote May in the "Sunday Telegraph".

Several rebellious centrist Labour MPs, who want a soft Brexit or to stay in the European Union, are mulling forming a new party, according to Sunday's Observer.

On Wednesday will vote on EU-great-grandson, Donald Tusk, with the Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar.

Warnings of the consequences of a no-deal Brexit intensified last week as several multinational firms, including Airbus and Ford, said jobs could suffer with an unfavourable negotiating outcome.

Opponents to Brexit were quick to seize on the Sky News claim, which the firm said it would not comment on.

"That is what Parliament instructed me to do on Tuesday night", May said asserted.

The Sunday Times leads with "plans" on how the Queen may be evacuated in the event of unrest as a result of a no-deal Brexit.
