  • The crash in Southern California set two houses alight

It's been reported that a small plane came apart in the air, dropping parts throughout a neighbourhood in southern California.

Plane crash in Yorba Linda, California kills 5 and injures 2.

Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the aircraft went down under unknown circumstances.

Twitter user, JoshuaRNelson posted a video shortly after 2pm of what appears to be burning plane parts on a residential street.

The pilot was the Cessna 414A's only occupant, and a source told the Los Angeles Times the man had flown frequently out of the Fullerton Municipal Airport.

Fire officials say two people were treated in hospital for burns.

Pokey Sanchez, an assistant chief with the Orange County Fire Department, said firefighters planned to sift through the badly burned two-story house in case there are additional victims of the Sunday afternoon crash.

Two other people were injured in the incident.

It was not immediately known how many people were on board the plane, which had taken off from Fullerton Municipal Airport. "It shook our house".

The main body of the twin-engine plane was found in the backyard of another home not far from the burned house.

Footage from the scene showed a blaze engulfing one of the houses in the suburban area with people shouting to keep away from the building.
