Data not finalised, says Niti Aayog about report on unemployment rising

The country's unemployment rate was at a 45-year-high of 6.1 per cent in 2017-18, according to the National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO's) periodic labour force survey (PLFS), which has been accessed by the Business Standard newspaper.

Citing the report, the Congress president tweeted: "NoMo Jobs!". It did not give a figure for 1972/73.

"The confusion is created by some who are using a draft report". I don't blame our opponents for blaming us on the issue of jobs, after all no one has an accurate data on jobs. It also exposes the utter failure of the BJP-led government to deliver on its promise of providing two crore jobs every year, that is, ten crore new jobs during the last five years. "If it is a draft report, it can not be said that the government is not releasing the data", Rajiv Kumar said.

But, while India's economy has been expanding by 7 percent plus annually - the fastest pace among major economies - its uneven growth has meant that there are not enough new jobs to keep pace.

Modi's ambitious Make-in-India project has failed to take off.

"We have a evidence to show that jobs have been created".

For instance, the rate of joblessness among rural males in the age group of 15-29 years jumped more than three folds to 17.4 per cent in 2017-18 versus 5 per cent in 2011-12. The comparable rate for the United States was 63.1 percent in December.

"There's no link between this and the quarterly data", Mohanan told Reuters.

"We have not released the report". We are creating adequate number of jobs for new entrants.

A statistics ministry official said the NSSO had submitted the report, but it was up to the government to decide when it should be released.

The latest data on unemployment in India, which is yet to come in public domain, is the first comprehensive survey on employment conducted by a government agency after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation move in November 2016.

After the chaotic launch of a national sales tax in July 2017, hundreds of thousands have lost jobs in small businesses.

The report, revealed a day before the government's interim Budget, sets up a huge controversy just ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Earlier this month, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a leading independent think-tank, said the country lost as many as 11 million jobs previous year.
