"As the financial situation of the Venezuelan government became precarious due to a lack of oil profits, the Venezuelan leaders have been forced to look to other countries to bring in hard currency, and Russian Federation has been all too eager to support a regime in Caracas that is anti-United States and has taken a number of actions to threaten the interests of not just the US but other countries in the region", Jason Marczak, director of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the Washington, D.C. -based Atlantic Council, told Newsweek.

Officials warned that "the USA government has limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in Venezuela due to extremely limited infrastructure and poor security conditions", calling for State Department employees and their families to return home.

The key people in this crisis are the security forces, like the police and army.

Russia, Bolivia, Iran, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Turkey expressed their support for Maduro.

Domestically, attention has been on Venezuela's military, a traditional arbiter of political disputes in the country, as a critical indicator of whether the opposition will succeed in establishing a new government.

The United States argues that Maduro's re-election a year ago was invalid due to widespread irregularities.


Eight generals who command of strategic regions of the country reiterated their "absolute loyalty and subordination" to the socialist leader in messages carried on state television.

A deep depression marked by hyperinflation and shortages of food and medicine has triggered an exodus of Venezuelans to surrounding countries.

The Trump administration ordered all non-essential American diplomatic staff and government personnel in Venezuela to leave the South American nation, which has been roiled by escalating political unrest.

Diplomats at the Organization of American States held an emergency meeting Thursday on the Venezuelan crisis, during which 16 nations recognized Guaido as interim president.

A third source close to the Russian contractors also told Reuters there was a contingent of them in Venezuela, but could not say when they arrived or what their role was.

Rebecca Sarfatti, a Toronto-based activist originally from Venezuela, says the retirement income her mother living in Caracas receives every month doesn't cover the cost of bread and cheese for more than two days. "We call on the OAS and all its member states to act on decent democratic principles and the incontrovertible facts on the ground", said Pompeo.

Many Venezuelans are awaiting Guaido's guidance on the often-beleaguered opposition's next steps.
