  • Prince Philip was involved in the crash on Thursday afternoon More

After Prince Philip was involved in a auto accident in England Thursday that involved another vehicle with an infant inside, the queen's 97-year-old husband's brush with death is raising questions about elderly drivers.

Prince Philip had initially been checked over by a doctor at Sandringham, who also reported no injuries, following what looked like quite a serious crash, where the Prince's Land Rover had crashed into a Kia and flipped onto it's side.

Police said officers were called to the scene of the crash just before 3pm on Thursday after a Land Rover and a Kia were involved in a collision.

Mr King said: "Young, predominantly male, drivers are much more likely to crash within six months of passing their test than older drivers within six months of hanging up their keys".

Mr Warne said: 'I was driving home and I saw a auto - a black Land Rover - come out from the side road on the right and there was a huge collision with another vehicle'. While the Queen is not required to have a driving license, Prince Philip is.

By coincidence, authorities in the area had planned to consider improving safety on the road, the A149.

Onlookers told the BBC that they helped the duke out of his Land Rover and he was "conscious but very, very shocked and shaken".

The 97-year-old royal was recovering Friday at the Sandringham estate.

Norfolk Police said in a statement this morning: "Investigations will continue today into a collision which happened at Sandringham yesterday (Thursday 17 January 2019) afternoon".

"Contact has been made privately with the passengers in the other vehicle and well-wishes exchanged".

Reportedly, the accident occurred as Prince Philip drove a Range Rover out of the driveway at about 3 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time in Great Britain - or 10 a.m. EST - near the village of Babingley.

Cobb and his teenage daughter were driving past when they saw the accident about 100 yards from their home.

King said auto insurers' risk profiles increased for over-75s, partly because drivers tended to be more frail and suffered more serious injuries.

Police officers are seen at the scene where Britain's Prince Philip was involved in a traffic accident.

The duke emerged unharmed but two people in another auto were injured in the crash that occurred Thursday when the duke was driving near the Sandringham Estate, according to police and Buckingham Palace.

Commenting on the circumstances of the crash, Mr Warne added: "I think there's no doubt that it was hit (by the duke's car)".

Despite being largely retired from public life, Philip remains fiercely independent and loves going for a spin in one of his vehicles.

"Prince Philip, as we know, is a very determined headstrong individual who has wanted to retain a sense of individual freedoms right up to the age of 97 and you can understand that", said Royal correspondent Roya Nikka.

The royal, 68, stepped out for an official royal outing in Lancashire on Friday, and as the first royal family member to be seen in public since Prince Philip's vehicle crash, she was asked about her father's condition.

Philip described in an interview how he took up carriage driving when he gave up polo aged 50, helping to establish it as a sport in subsequent years.

Drivers must give up their licences if their doctor tells them to stop driving for three months or more, or if they do not meet the required standards for driving due to a medical condition.
