Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said of President Donald Trump's relationship with his Russian counterpart after a series of recent reports provoked more "serious questions" about their interactions, and as public anticipation continues to build over the forthcoming results of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

Asked whether he'd like Congress to investigate the matter, including potentially calling the president's translator to testify, McCarthy said, "I'd like the president to be able to build these relationships".

"If you compare objectively, President Trump's policies to Russia compared to President Obama's policies to Russia - by any measure, President Obama was much easier, was much more gentler on Russia".

Warner and Johnson spoke on CNN's "State of the Union", while Coons and Graham appeared on "Fox News Sunday".

When asked about the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of Trump as a potential threat to national security, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBS News in a taped interview that "the notion that President Trump is a threat to American national security is absolutely ludicrous".

Asked if he believes it's possible that President Trump has been compromised by Russia, Sen.

The Russia reports came as Trump plays up his presence at the White House during the standoff with Democrats over funding for his long-promised wall at the U.S. -Mexico border. Pirro asked at one point, referring to the Times' reporting that Trump's firing of then-FBI Director James Comey led to an FBI probe of whether Trump was working for Russian Federation. They also sought to determine whether Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow.

Current and former US officials told the Post that after a 2017 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hamburg, Germany, Trump took his interpreter's notes and told her not to speak of details of the meeting with other administration officials.

Other US officials learned that Trump had taken possession of the notes when they asked the interpreter for information about the discussion beyond a brief readout Tillerson had provided.

"Anybody could have listened to that meeting", he said of a closed-door, one-on-one meeting with Putin in Helsinki. Warner accused the White House of being very slow to put in place the penalties.

As CNN first reported, the Federal Bureau of Investigation opened the Trump probe, in the hectic days after the President fired Comey, after considering various options for dealing with the firing.

In addition to the Mueller probe, the Senate Intelligence Committee has been conducting a parallel investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

The interview comes as the Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee intends to investigate the claims made in the New York Times report. The Times says it's unclear whether Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the counterintelligence inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".
