As the storm heads east, up to 16 inches (41 cm) of snow were likely in western Missouri and St. Louis.

Snow totals that topped 10 inches in parts of the Kansas City area peaked at more than 20 inches in east-central Missouri, according to 72-hour snow totals from the National Weather Service. "St. Louis is seeing its worst snowstorm in five years".

The weather service issued a winter storm warning for areas of central and southern IL including Springfield, Champaign and Carbondale.

The Weather Network reported at least three deaths via Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). Police said the driver of a military surplus vehicle lost control due to slick road conditions on Saturday night in Pulaski County, leading the vehicle to be struck by two tractor-trailers.

Dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed at St. Louis Lambert International Airport over the weekend, while United Airlines offered travel waivers for passengers changing flights across the path of the storm.

Missouri was by far the hardest hit in a massive snow storm that stretched some 2,000 miles across the nation from Colorado to the Atlantic Ocean.

"With the moisture that was around an inch in liquid or more, that was plenty enough to stack up what we got across the area", he said. A foot was recorded in Columbia and 17 inches in Harrisburg as of 10 a.m. ET.


Weather map of the National Weather Service shows the snowstorm moved into Kansas and Nebraska from the Rockies on Friday then went eastward into Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana.

Virginia State Police said they responded to more than 300 traffic crashes and helped almost 200 disabled vehicles in Virginia from midnight to late Sunday afternoon. In anticipation of the storm, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday.

Forecasters said heavy snow could fall in mountain areas, such as Charlottesville and Staunton, Virginia.

Washington, where many federal government offices are closed due to the USA government shutdown, is expected to receive 6 to 8 inches of snow from this storm, according to the National Weather Service.

In Kansas City, Missouri, 7 inches of snow was reported early Saturday afternoon.

Springfield's State Journal-Register reports the state capital broke a 55-year record for daily snowfall on Saturday.

Hundreds of thousands of power outages have been reported across Kansas, Missouri, Virginia and North Carolina, according to Poweroutage.us, and over 650 flights have been canceled as over 1,100 have experienced delays across the USA on Sunday as of 12 p.m. EST, according to FlightAware.
