Manafort Allegedly Shared 2016 Polling With Associate Linked To Russian Intelligence

  • Can you redact that suit jacket though

Although the filing does not say whether the polling information was public or what was done with it, it raises the possibility that Russian Federation might have used inside information from the campaign as part of its effort to interfere with the election on US President Donald Trump's behalf.

The Ukraine peace plan that they discussed likely would have dealt with Russian intervention in the region.

Manafort misled prosecutors in debriefings about his communications and a meeting with Konstantin Kilimnik, an associate with ties to Russian intelligence, according to a December 7 filing by Mueller.

Kilimnik has denied ties to Russian intelligence. While the redactions don't specifically mention the Trump campaign by name, they do mention the "2016 presidential campaign".

Manafort provided "complete and truthful information to the best of his ability", the lawyers wrote in the 10-page filing.

Mueller claimed on November 26 that Manafort breached that September plea deal and committed crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the special counsel's office on "a variety of subject matters".

The defense lawyers say Mueller's team has indicated they will not pursue additional charges against Manafort. Journalists quickly discovered that the redacted portions of the court documents could be read by simply copying the redacted text and pasting it elsewhere.

"It is not surprising at all that Mr Manafort was unable to recall specific details prior to having his recollection refreshed", Manafort's team wrote.

The poorly redacted court papers also revealed a meeting between Manafort and Kilimnik in Madrid, although no date was provided - and that the two discussed a Ukraine peace plan on more than one occasion. During a proffer meeting with prosecutors on September 11, Manafort told investigators "he would have given the Ukrainian peace plan more thought" had he not been working on Trump's campaign at the time.

The lawyers further stated that Manafort's time in solitary confinement has negatively impacted his state of mind, and he was not able to prepare for his meetings with federal prosecutors.

In a July 7, 2016 Manafort told Kilimnik that he was willing to brief Deripaska on the Trump campaign.

The former official will be sentenced for those crimes in February. He declined to comment on other pieces of the filing.

Lawyers working for President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort have accidentally revealed the clearest evidence of coordination between the campaign and Russians, the media reported on Wednesday. Manafort denies colluding with any Russians.

Kilimnik has not entered a plea in United States courts, and Manafort has pleaded guilty to the witness tampering allegation and has been convicted on several lobbying-related financial crimes.

The former Trump campaign chief's lawyers said their client has been suffering from gout, anxiety and depression and that he never purposely lied to them during his 12 interview sessions with the special counsel and other prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Manafort also lied about the circumstances of a $125,000 wire transfer in 2017.

Manafort was convicted in federal court in Virginia in August of bank fraud and tax evasion connected to his work in Ukraine. By pleading guilty, Manafort avoided a second trial on charges that he failed to disclose lobbying on behalf of the Ukrainian government, and that he laundered money.
