Jets hire Adam Gase: Instant analysis of New York's new head coach

  • Report Former Packers head coach Mike Mc Carthy only considering Jets job

While the Arizona Cardinals (Kilff Kingsbury) and the Green Bay Packers (Matt LaFleur) have found their next head coach, the Miami Dolphins are still looking for theirs after firing Adam Gase on December 31.

Gase was hired despite going 23-25 over three seasons in Miami, leading to his firing. Although New York hasn't been to the playoffs since 2010, the year McCarthy won the Super Bowl in Green Bay, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold provided a potentially bright future. Despite having the likes of Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Joe Schobert, Damarious Randall, Larry Ogunjobi and Jabrill Peppers, the Browns ranked in the bottom 3 in total defense in 2018.

Because when you've missed the playoffs nine straight seasons and haven't advanced to a Super Bowl in nearly 50 years (two more days to be exact), those are the things you should try doing to get things turned around for a fan base that has suffered immeasurably for decades.

- Would Gase, after being fired just days ago, have been better off being forced to take a step back for a year or so and work as a coordinator again before jumping right back into the deep end of the head-coaching pool? McCarthy had been fired with four games left in the season after a poor start but is still on contract until 2019 where he is slated to make $8 million.

Before joining the Dolphins, Gase served as offensive coordinator on John Fox's staffs with the Broncos (2013-14) and Bears (2015).

The Dolphins have interviewed Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. That's in line with modern National Football League philosophy, but given Gase's history as a head coach-which isn't any more impressive than Bowles' on its face-this could be an uphill battle for a team in need of talent at several positions along the roster.
