He told the president and White House officials of his plans to leave around the time Barr would assume the position after a Senate confirmation, the network reported. Rosenstein, who had written a memo supporting the dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey based on the premise that Comey had treated Hillary Clinton unfairly during the 2016 campaign, had more recently clashed with Trump after reports he made comments about overthrowing Trump or secretly recording him shortly before Mueller's appointment.

However, Graham said after meeting with Barr Wednesday that he was not concerned that Barr would interfere with the Mueller investigation. Text overlaid on the image reads: "Now that Russian collusion is a proven lie, when do the trials for treason begin?" Barr said he would go through the process of determining whether the Mueller report could be shared with Congress and the public when the report is finished, according to Graham.

"I don't think there's any willingness by the President or the White House to push him out", Sanders said.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Rosenstein had always planned to stay around two years.

Trump also shared a photo on Twitter in November showing Rosenstein and others criticized by the president behind bars, calling for them to be tried for "treason".

President Donald Trump's attorney general nominee, William Barr, has said he will allow Special Counsel Robert Mueller to finish the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said on Wednesday. He has long overseen the investigation and has frequently drawn Trump's ire.

Barr, who served as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush in the early 1990s, has publicly questioned the scope of the Mueller investigation.

"I asked Mr. Barr directly do you think Bob, Mr. Mueller's on a witch hunt?" Rosenstein will stay on to ensure a smooth transition for Barr, the official said, adding that Rosenstein has viewed his current job as a two-year stint and is not being forced out.

He then handed off oversight to his deputy, putting Mr Rosenstein in the spotlight and leading to criticism from Republicans in Congress as well as Mr Trump. The US Senate Judiciary Committee will hold confirmation hearings next week for Barr.

In June 2017, Barr sent a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein arguing that a potential obstruction of justice inquiry into the president is "fatally misconceived".

He has accused the investigation of being led by "Democrat loyalists".
