  • US President Donald Trump paints the Mexico border as an open gate for criminals including rapists terrorists people with dangerous diseases and phony asylum seekers

Trump's Oval Office speech - his first as president - will be followed by his visit Thursday to the southern border to highlight his demand for a barrier.

"Some have suggested a barrier is immoral", Mr. Trump said. "The only thing that is immoral is the politicians who do nothing and continue to allow more innocent people to be so horribly victimised".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both Democrats, dismissed Trump's comments.

The number of illegal border crossings is down from 1.6 million in 2000 to fewer than 400,000 past year.

The President also repeated an assertion that the wall will be paid for by Mexico through the new U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Instead, he will try to make the public case for his $5.6 billion border wall, a demand that is the heart of a standoff that has led to a partial government shutdown.

Trump has been discussing the idea of declaring a national emergency to allow him to circumvent Congress and move forward with the wall.

Such an emergency declaration would represent a dramatic escalation of the dispute and would immediately draw legal challenges.

Fighting for advantage in the government shutdown battle, U.S. President Donald Trump aimed to use a prime-time address Tuesday to convince Americans he needs billions of dollars from Congress for his long-promised border wall to resolve security and humanitarian problems he contends have reached a crisis pitch.

US President Donald Trump wants the Democrats to approve funding for a wall to end a government shutdown.

"My fellow Americans, today I am speaking to you because there is a growing "humanitarian and security crisis" in our southern border".

Some Democrats have in the past been willing to negotiate some sort of wall funding in exchange for presidential backing of immigration changes that would allow people brought to the USA illegally as children receive legal status.

Betting site bookmaker.eu was offering odds for wagers on whether Trump would lie during his speech, declare a national emergency or end the shutdown by January 18. Almost half the GOP Senate caucus is up for re-election next year, putting added pressure on them to get the shutdown over with.

Mrs Pelosi accused Mr Trump of being "full of misinformation and even malice", and choosing fear over facts. All networks carrying Trump's address have agreed to carry the Democrats' response. His insistence on it now appears to be an attempt to galvanize his base after Republican losses in the fall midterm elections and ahead of the President's own re-election campaign next year. At the same time, the number of arrests of people crossing illegally from Mexico has been been falling since the early 2000s.

Experts say if the shutdown persists, Canadians entering the US will see an escalating impact at the northern border, where Customs and Border Protection officials are working without pay because their jobs are considered an essential service. The Trump administration's claims that there is some sort of terrorism risk from the border have been debunked. "It's one of increasing numbers of families coming", said Sarah Goodman, a political scientist at the University of California, Irvine, who specializes in immigration policy.

"There is a crisis, but it's not one of terror".
