  • Sultan Muhammad V has stepped down as Malaysia’s king after a week of speculation about the monarch’s status following his two-month leave of absence

The King of Malaysia has abdicated after just two years on the throne.

Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan resigned as the 15th Agong, or Supreme Ruler of the federation, the National Palace said on Sunday.

The king stepped aside Sunday following intense speculation about his future after reports surfaced in recent weeks that he had taken medical leave, and then Wednesday the former Miss Moscow.

Sultan Muhammad V's decision is the first time a king has stepped aside during his five-year term on the throne.

The 49-year-old, who is noted for his love for cars and extreme sports, took leave at the start of November for two months.

Despite the images, Prime Minister Mahathir said then that he did not have official confirmation on the wedding when questioned about it earlier this week.

"We Malaysians pray for his health and that he is protected by Allah".

Under the rotational system, the Sultan of Pahang state, Ahmad Shah, is next in line although the sultan is ailing according to local media, a rumour the palace has strenuously denied.

Despite mounting speculation in recent days the king might give up the throne, there was still palpable shock across the country at the first abdication of a king since the end of British rule in 1957.

During the king's absence, the Sultan of Perak Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah was ruling as Deputy King.

Despite this, the role is accorded considerable prestige, particularly among the country's Malay Muslim majority, for whom the king is seen as upholding Malay and Islamic tradition.

It added that the king is ready to resume working on the development of the state of Kelantan, where he is Sultan.

Other political figures thanked the King for his service.

While the position is mostly ceremonial, it holds special discretionary powers, including swearing in the prime minister and pardoning convicts.

Sultan Muhammad himself was selected on the final day of a three-day sitting of the Conference of Rulers in 2016.

Sultan Muhammad V delayed Mahathir's swearing-in as prime minister after a historic election victory in May previous year, and also delayed giving his consent to the appointment of a non-Muslim attorney general.

It's been claimed the royal family was uneasy with the marriage.
