  • US manufacturers say Trump tariffs will bring higher prices, not more jobs

American envoys are due in Beijing for talks Monday in a tariff battle over Chinese technology ambitions.

President Trump and President Xi agreed to a ceasefire at a summit in Argentina in 2018, putting on hold any additional tariffs for 90 days from December the 1, while the two attempt to negotiate a deal.

A team led by Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish will travel to China for talks, China's commerce ministry and USTR said. Its one-sentence announcement gave no other details of the agenda or who else would take part.

After the discussions between USA and China at Buenos Aires to remove the stalemate surrounding trade tariffs, China has expressed willingness to work with its beleaguered trade partner.

Trump initiated the trade war because of complaints over unfair Chinese trade practices - concerns shared by the European Union, Japan and others.

In addition to Gerrish, the official delegation will also include David Malpass, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for global affairs. The two sides face a March 1 deadline; the USA has promised to hike its import tax from 10 percent to 25 percent on $200 billion of Chinese products if no deal is reached.

The country´s manufacturing sector has also been hit by the trade dispute, contracting last month for the first time in over two years, according to official data.

The makeup of the USA team was announced Friday by the trade representative's office.

United States officials will travel to Beijing for talks on Monday and Tuesday next week, with China's Ministry of Commerce saying it hopes the talks will be "positive and constructive".

The spat has rattled companies and financial markets that worry it would drag on global economic growth that is showing signs of slowing.

Trump has said talks toward a deal are progressing well, but it was unclear if Beijing will yield to key United States demands over trade imbalances, market access, and alleged Chinese abuses of intellectual property.

For their part, Chinese officials are unhappy with USA curbs on exports of "dual use" technology with possible military applications. It said the threat of US tariff hikes was the "dominating factor" for almost half, while others moved due to higher costs or tighter environmental regulation. An escalating trade war would make the situation even worse.
