  • Fire at escape room in Poland kills 5 teenage girls

Five teenage girls died and one man was seriously injured when a fire broke out in a room where they were playing an escape game in the northern Polish city of Koszalin.

A police spokeswoman in the city of Koszalin, Monika Kosiec, said the victims were thought to have been celebrating one of their birthdays.

Poland's firefighting chief, Leszek Suski, said an initial investigation of the Escape Room site discovered that electrical wiring was makeshift and too close to flammable materials, while the man in charge was probably not even there when the fire broke out.

Since Friday, more than 200 of Poland's some 1100 escape rooms have been checked, revealing a number of safety flaws that needed to be immediately fixed.

Escape rooms are entertainment venues in which participants are given a set amount of time to solve a series of puzzles in order to get out of a locked space.

Autopsies showed the girls died of carbon monoxide asphyxiation, prosecutors said, a technical term for smoke inhalation.

In a follow-up tweet he demanded that the cause of the fire "must be fully explained". The spokesperson for the Koszaliner police stressed, however, that one could say nothing to the causes of the fire. The operator of "Escape Rooms" to obtain in Poland so far, no special permits from the fire Department.

These escape rooms have become extremely popular in the past five years, especially among young adults. Five joyous, growing up girls have been torn out of their lives.

RTÉ have said that the 28-year-old suspect was charged with "deliberately creating the danger of a fire in the escape room and with unintentionally causing the death of people in a fire".

A government official confirmed the five girls who died were all 15 years of age.
