People Are So Not Here for Ellen's Defense of Kevin Hart

  • Kevin Hart on Thursday

Last month Hart backed away from the gig two days after being named, when some homophobic tweets he made a decade ago resurfaced.

Kevin Hart is apparently shutting the door on hosting the Oscars, despite seeming to suggest otherwise while talking to Ellen DeGeneres. "Either my apology is accepted, or it isn't", Hart said.

"I've taken ten years to put my apology to work. I looked at life through a different lens, and because of that, I live it a different way".

"This whole ellen/kevin hart thing is a ideal example of how privilege and constant praise distorts a person's reality so much that they perceive any criticism, however valid, to be an attack on their entire livelihood", added another. "Because that was wrong".

"After a day full of celebrations and congratulations, I'm hit with an onslaught, on social media, of my past, coming back up again... literally the next morning", the comedian says, referring to the homophobic tweets he posted between 2009-11. "You've done it." She proceeded to call Hart's critics "haters" who will "win" if he doesn't host the Oscars.

For defending Kevin Hart and believing in giving him a second chance, DeGeneres was quickly attacked. The Academy asked Hart to apologize but Hart declined, saying he'd already done so numerous times, and stepped down from hosting the Oscars.

Kevin Hart might still have some friends in charge of organizing the Academy Awards, as sources say there are some who would still be open to him hosting the 2019 awards ceremony.

"Has Kevin Hart made any meaningful effort to reach out to the LGTBQ community and listen to their perspective on why his past comments are so offensive and damaging? And I'm glad that it was as authentic and real as I could have hoped that it would be", he said.

None of that means, however, that Hart has no ambitions to stand upon the Oscars stage. You have grown, you have apologized, you are apologized again right now.

Hart described having to address the tweets at press events over the years, including as recently as 2015 while promoting the film Get Hard with Will Ferrell.

Ellen then replied with a blanket blessing of forgiveness on behalf of LGBTQ people everywhere. I don't need the Academy to make the Oscars "hip" or bring in an edgy comedian who's going to appeal to a younger demographic.

"I called The Academy today, because I really want you to host the Oscars ..." I was called fag by people I loved before I even understood what being gay meant. The comedian explains how he has apologized in the past for the same exact incident, and shares the reason for leaving the host gig is because he doesn't want the cloud of hate to distract the audience from the prestigious Oscars night.
