Brazil’s New President Thanks Trump - Vows To Bring Prosperity ‘Under God’s Protection’

In his first public comments on President Trump's decision to pull the ground troops, Pompeo said it "in no way changes anything that this administration is working on alongside Israel".

Tuesday's festivities in the capital Brasilia began with a motorcade procession along the main road leading to Congress and other government buildings.

Once inside Congress, Mr Bolsonaro and his vice president, retired Gen Hamilton Mourao, took the oath of office.

The 63-year-old former paratrooper and veteran lawmaker received swift congratulations via Twitter from US President Donald Trump, with whom he shares a similar, brash style and outlook.

Mr Bolsonaro is the latest of several far-right leaders around the globe who have come to power by riding waves of anger at the establishment and promising to ditch the status quo. Since a US -led invasion in 2003 toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, Israel has anxious that Iraq's Shi'ite majority could tilt towards Iran. "Together, under God's protection, we shall bring prosperity and progress to our people!"

"I call on all congressmen to help me rescue Brazil from corruption, criminality and ideological submission", he said, earning a congratulatory message from Trump.

"Our flag will never be red", Bolsonaro said, a reference to communism.

Following a knife attack during the presidential campaign that left Bolsonaro hospitalised for weeks, security was tight for his inauguration. Military tanks, fighter jets and even anti-aircraft missiles also were deployed. "As a clear sign of that diplomatic shift, Bolsonaro plans to move the Brazilian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, breaking with Brazil's traditional support for a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday that the planned withdrawal of USA forces from Syria would not change Washington's commitments to the Jewish state. Leftist president such as Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Miguel Diaz-Canel of Cuba - who Bolsonaro has deemed dictators - were not invited. The United States was represented by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

While Bolsonaro enjoys sky-high approval ratings, many in Brazil fear his nostalgia for the military dictatorship that reigned from 1964 to 1985, his hardline approach to fighting crime and his record of disparaging women and minorities could herald a harsh shake-up.
