  • UAE 're-opens embassy in Syria' as Arab leaders begin to welcome Assad back from the cold

Bahrain's embassy in Damascus and the Syrian diplomatic mission in Manama have been operating "without interruption" the Bahraini foreign ministry said in a statement today, a day after the UAE reopened its embassy in Syria.

Syria's allied in the Gulf are reportedly working bring Damascus back into the Arab League, over eight years after the country was kicked out for its brutal response to peaceful demonstrations.

The United Arab Emirates has reopen its embassy in Damascus - which has been closed for seven years - on Thursday, according to officials.

"The Arab role in Syria has become more necessary to counter Iran and Turkey's hold on the region", tweeted UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash. The reopened embassy marks the first state of the Gulf Cooperation Council to resume diplomatic work in Syria.

Abdul-Hakim Naimi, the UAE's charge d'affaires, visited the site in Damascus and told journalists: "The opening of our embassy is the first step for the return of other Arab embassies". The UAE severed its ties with Syria in February 2012.

The sudden withdrawal of USA troops from Syria has also increased the security anxieties of Arab countries, Zou said, encouraging them to adjust their policies.

Russian Middle East envoy Mikhail Bogdanov said Thursday the reopening comes at a time of increased popularity for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Bashir said Sudan is ready to provide whatever is needed to support the territorial integrity and unity of Syria.

The decision aims to establish peace, security and stability throughout Syria and to restore relations with the country.

With military operations winding down in several parts of the country and the capital fully secure, Damascus is also working on breaking its physical isolation.

This move will also prevent the dangers of regional interference in Syrian affairs. Since then, most Arab countries have cut or downgraded their diplomatic relations with Syria. It is the seventh largest producer of oil and gas in the world and has been a member of the Arab League since its independence in 1971.
