Cyberattack targets newspapers in USA, prevents some from publishing

  • Computer virus hampers San Diego Union-Tribune's Saturday delivery

It ultimately caused delays in production and delivery of the papers on Saturday, a source familiar with the situation told the Los Angeles Times, one of the publications targeted by the hack.

The Los Angeles Times, like the Union-Tribune, used to be owned by Tribune Publishing and still uses some of its systems.

The source gave no other details about the origin of the attack or the motive, describing the attacker only as a "foreign entity", The Times reported.

"The attack delayed distribution of Saturday editions of the Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union Tribune", the LA Times said on Saturday.

In brief: A number of major USA newspapers had their printing and delivery processes disrupted yesterday after they were hit with a cyberattack. "We apologize to all of our readers for the inconvenience", it said.

In a statement, Tribune Publishing claimed, "the personal data of our subscribers, online users, and advertising clients has not been compromised".

The Times said that the glitch was detected Friday but technology teams were unable to fix the problem before press time. Some markets will receive an abridged version of the Saturday edition on Sunday.

On its Twitter account, Tribune Publishing Company acknowledged the issues, empathizing with customers affected. The papers had previously been part of Tronc, the previous name of Tribune Publishing.

"It also stymied distribution of the West Coast editions of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, which are printed at the Los Angeles Times' Olympic printing plant in downtown Los Angeles", the newspaper added.

Manning said it is likely that Sunday paper delivery will be affected as well.

The Saturday edition of the Chicago Tribune was published without paid death notices and classified ads, according to the newspaper. "We are doing everything we can to restore full service and to continue to make our journalism available to you both in print and digitally", Light's statement read.

A Tribune Publishing spokesperson didn't confirm the ransomware infection, but did say the incident was caused by "malware".
