Google to spend $1 billion on major New York City expansion

  • Google to Spend $1 Billion to Establish New Campus in New York City

That sentiment is similar to what Apple said last week, when it announced plans to build a new $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, furthering its growth in a city where it already employs more people (some 6,200 workers) than it does anywhere else outside of its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

Google parent Alphabet's chief financial officer Ruth Porat said it would lease large office buildings in lower Manhattan, which will become the centerpiece of a campus of more than 160 000 square meters. Once the Google Hudson Square campus is complete, it will serve as the primary headquarter for the company's Global Business Organization in NY.

After establishing its first NYC offices in 2000, Google now has more than 7,000 employees in the Big Apple. The new campus will give Google space to more than double its headcount in NY over the next decade. The over 1.7 million square-foot campus is a result of lease agreements at 315 and 345 Hudson Street and a signed letter of intent at 550 Washington Street. Google expects to begin moving into the Hudson Street buildings by 2020 and for the new building to be complete by 2022. In total, the new space is reported to span more than 1.7 million square feet.

Google's newest Manhattan project come as Amazon, another internet-industry giant, also picked New York City for a massive new outpost.

"We believe that as our company grows, we have a responsibility to support the communities we call home". Amazon's move to both New York City and Virginia, in particular, is causing some controversy due to the heavy tax breaks the company is receiving.

It also makes sense for Google as NY has been the centre for their core advertising business, Cordwell added.
