Apple predicts dire consequences settling with Qualcomm over China iPhone ban

  • Apple to update iPhone software after threat of China ban

Apple will start rolling out these updates starting next week, which would most likely address 'possible concern about their compliance with the court order.' These updates will further address the minor functionality of the two patents issued by Qualcomm in the court.

All iPhone models were available for purchase on Apple's China website on Friday.

Nikkei Asian Review reports from its sources that Apple could also seek to minimize liabilities if the ban is enforced by reducing reliance on assemblers Foxconn and Wistron and turning to Pegatron - Qualcomm confirmed that the ODM apparently had apparently licensed the patents in question on behalf of Apple.

"Based on the iPhone models we offer today in China, we believe we are in compliance", Apple said.

But Apple isn't ready to capitulate to Qualcomm's demands.

The case against Apple is basically a part of a global patent dispute between the two tech giants which comprises of several lawsuits.

However, Apple does not mince words when describing how destructive an Apple sales ban in China would be. Earlier this week, Qualcomm saw some success in the Chinese courts and got most iPhones banned from sale and import into China due to patent infringement. Apple has argued that its former supplier unfairly leverages its position as the biggest supplier of chips for smartphones to force payment of the fees.

Like Apple, Chinese smartphone makers had argued for years that Qualcomm - which owns a swathe of patents essential to modern wireless communications - is abusing its position and levying punitive fees. Apple notes that the ban will cost it millions of dollars a day and negatively affect Chinese consumers as well as the government as the latter could lose hundreds of thousands of tax.

Now, however, it appears that Apple has an elegant solution for the issue - a software update. This ban was a result of victory to Qualcomm in winning a preliminary junction in the court.
