  • Suicide car bomber kills at least three in southeast Iran

A suicide vehicle bomber attacked a police headquarters in the Iranian port city of Chabahar on Thursday, killing at least two police and wounding 28 people, state TV reported.

A general view of the scene of a vehicle bombing in front of a police station in the city of Chabahar, on December 06, 2018 in southern Iran.

Mohammad Mehran Aminifar, head of Medical Sciences University in Zahedan, the capital of southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province, told state TV that 42 people were wounded, including four kids and a pregnant woman.

"The terrorists exploded a auto carrying explosives at the gate of the [police] headquarters", Bameri was quoted as saying by the official government news agency IRNA.

He also made a reference to Iran's past measures in retaliation for hostile attacks, noting, "In 2010, our security services intercepted and captured extremists en route from UAE".

Ansar al-Furqan, a Sunni jihadi group, clamed credit for the attack.

Sistan-Baluchistan province, where the bombing hit, has always been a flashpoint, with a number of attacks reported in recent past.

Videos posted online by Iranian news agencies, purportedly from Chabahar, showed thick smoke rising in the area after the blast.

Another coordinated June 7, 2017 IS group assault on parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, killed at least 18 people and wounded more than 50.

Chabahar is a key port city on the Gulf of Oman about 100 kilometers west of Iran's border with Pakistan.

Iran has stepped up security in border areas after gunmen in September opened fire on a military parade in Iran's southwestern city of Ahvaz, killing 25 people, nearly half of them members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards corps.

Terror attacks in Shiite Iran are rare, but militants have stepped up action in recent months.

"Iran WILL bring terrorists and their masters to justice", the Iranian minister underlined.

Tehran accuses its key regional rival Saudi Arabia and the U.S. of funding most of these groups, a charge Riyadh and Washington deny.

India is developing the Chabahar port along with Iran and Afghanistan.

It said India condemned the "despicable terror" attack.

Such acts of violence will also "boost the Islamic Republic of Iran's resolve to fight terrorism", said Jahangiri, calling for all-out efforts to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
