Graham Breaks With Trump: 'Zero Chance' MBS Wasn't Involved In Khashoggi Murder

Saudi Arabia has detained 21 people and says it is seeking the death penalty for five of them. Assiri and Qahtani were reportedly suspended from their duties but they do not face criminal charges.

"It's really risky for America to look away here", Graham said.

"The global community seems to doubt Saudi Arabia's commitment to prosecute this heinous crime".

Corker was joined by Senator Lindsey Graham, who had a scathing reaction after hearing from Haspel about the CIA's conclusions on the October 2 killing in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Corker was among the senators who participated in a briefing earlier Tuesday with CIA Director Gina Haspel about the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "Guilty", Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tennessee), who now chairs the Foreign Relations committee, said after the briefing.

Murphy, D-Conn., on MSNBC's "Morning Joe", said the two officials had been placed "in a bad spot", during the all-senators briefing by President Donald Trump's "maybe he did, maybe he didn't" position on whether Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the murder.

"There's not a smoking gun, there's a smoking saw", Graham said, referring to the way in which the reporter was believed to have been murdered.

"I would continue to recommend that we are not a participant in a civil war in Yemen and remain an honest procurer, if you will, with the ability to contribute to a diplomatic solution in Yemen", Dunford said in an interview with the Washington Post on Thursday.

Senators in both parties have been enraged over the killing and over Trump's equivocating on who is to blame.

Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, co-sponsored a bipartisan resolution calling for an end to USA military aid in the Saudi-led war in Yemen which has found new support in the wave of attention to Khashoggi's death.

"This debate's moving forward".

As Common Dreams reported, the Senate last week advanced Sen.

Republican House leaders haven't indicated they will take up any of the measures, meaning any action by the Senate is likely to be symbolic, for now.

While the Trump administration has repeatedly distinguished Khashoggi's murder and the war in Yemen as separate issues, lawmakers are tying both together as a showcase of how blank-check support for Saudi Arabia erodes US moral standing. Human rights groups say the war is wreaking havoc on the country and subjecting civilians to indiscriminate bombing.

"Maybe he did and maybe he didn't", Trump said last month about whether the crown prince had known about the murder.

Meanwhile, the military relations between Washington and Riyadh have not been changed following the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Dunford stressed.

The Senate is expected to vote on the war powers resolution next week, but lawmakers have not yet agreed on how, or whether, it should be amended. "I know there are going to be a lot of efforts to try to remove the underlying language and replace it with something weaker". While Saudi contributions may be important to individual research projects, they make up a sliver of the university's overall $3.3 billion annual operating budget - which would amount to an estimated $11 million - Lester said.
