United Nations urges global inquiry on Khashoggi killing

  • Turkey seeks arrest of Saudi crown prince aides over Khashoggi

Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, Bob Corker (R-TN) was also briefed and said, "I have zero question in my mind that the crown prince, MBS, ordered the killing, monitored the killing, knew exactly what was happening, planned it in advance".

Panelists on MSNBC's Morning Joe raised concerns on Wednesday morning about the repercussions of President Donald Trump's personal relationship with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"Before this briefing, I was convinced that we had to take steps on the war in Yemen and I believe that we had to take steps on the Saudis", Menendez said.

According to the Istanbul prosecutor, Khashoggi was strangled to death after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documents for marrying his fiancee, and his body was then dismembered and destroyed.

Graham stressed that he believes the crown prince has put the decades-long US-Saudi relationship at risk. The journalist, who had lived for a time in the US and wrote for The Washington Post, had been critical of the Saudi regime.

Khashoggi, a USA resident, was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. Human rights groups say the war is wreaking havoc on the country and subjecting civilians to indiscriminate bombing.

The president has touted Saudi arms deals worth billions of dollars to the USA and recently thanked Saudi Arabia for plunging oil prices.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Tuesday that senators are trying to figure out how to amend the resolution, which directs the president to remove most USA armed forces from hostilities affecting Yemen.

Corker said it would be "difficult" to come up with legislation that could pass the Senate.

"I think we have lost a lot of our moral high ground", McCaskill said on the day of the vote. Whatever was revealed in that Central Intelligence Agency briefing had to be irrefutable for so much of Trump's senate supporters to lash out like this.

The South Carolina senator was directly repudiating comments by top Trump administration officials, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who just last week said there was "no smoking gun" implicating the crown prince.

The visit comes "without any consideration of principles and values and without taking into consideration Algeria's reputation and its real, firm and permanent interests", he added.

President Trump has equivocated about assigning blame for Khashoggi's killing, frustrating lawmakers from both parties.

"Somebody should be punished", Republican Senator Richard Shelby said. "MBS, the crown prince, is a wrecking ball".
