Trump calls for his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen to be jailed

Special counsel Robert Mueller recommended that former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn receive a sentence for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation that included no prison time, in a court filing Tuesday that called Flynn's cooperation "substantial".

And this week, prosecutors are set to file several court documents that could reveal major new details about three key players in the Russian Federation investigation: the former national security adviser Michael Flynn, the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and the former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen.

The special counsel said that some of the information Flynn gave is sensitive, and related to ongoing investigations, so it asked that part of an addendum to the sentencing memo be sealed.

Trump accused Cohen of fabricating stories about his Russian Federation dealings to minimise his sentence on multiple counts of tax evasion, financial fraud and campaign finance violations that he has admitted in federal court in NY. Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, was found guilty on eight counts of financial crimes.

Mueller indicated that Flynn had already participated in 19 interviews in the criminal investigation.

Mueller's Tuesday filing is expected to shed light on the level of Flynn's cooperation with federal prosecutors as they probe whether Trump campaign associates colluded with Russian Federation to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Trump has tweeted in the past in support of Flynn, saying that Mueller had "totally destroyed" his life unfairly.

According to memos kept by former FBI Director James Comey, Trump allegedly tried to protect Flynn at the time, calling him a "good guy" and asking Comey to dismiss the investigation into Flynn's false statements.

On Monday, Trump praised longtime associate and Republican operative Roger Stone, who has been under scrutiny by investigators over his comments about leaked Democratic emails during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The situation reportedly has shaken Trump, who during a G-20 summit appeared reluctant to take reporters' questions as he met with other world leaders. Mueller said the Russian ambassador then called Flynn on 31 December to explain that Putin's decision was a response to Flynn's request.

He has instead spent considerable time with his family and worked to position himself for a post-conviction career.

His sentencing was delayed for several months but even close confidantes have told ABC News they don't know why.

The filing is the first time prosecutors have described Flynn's assistance since his guilty plea past year.

Other than Flynn and Cohen, Mueller's team charged former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos with making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The White House has said that Flynn misled officials- including Vice President Mike Pence - about the content of his conversations.

Flynn also admitted to making false statements about unregistered foreign agent work he performed for the benefit of the Turkish government. Flynn was under investigation by the Justice Department for that work when he became national security adviser.
