Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to retire after Rose Bowl

  • BREAKING: Urban Meyer to step down at Ohio State

The announcement is expected to come from Meyer at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m.

At Ohio State, however, that's kind of hard because OSU has had a College Football Hall of Fame head coach at the helm for 67 of the last 68 years. The 54-year-old has battled the effects of an arachnoid cyst on his brain, which causes severe headaches, especially when under stress.

Still, there is a great deal of skepticism that Meyer's time on the sideline will be coming to an end.

Smith was sacked this year after being accused by his ex-wife of domestic abuse.

The school announced earlier in the day that Meyer would step down after the Buckeyes' appearance in the Rose Bowl.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer walked off the field with his wife, Shelley Meyer, early Sunday, after defeating Northwestern in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis. The investigation showed that he tolerated bad behavior for years from Smith, including domestic-violence accusations, drug addiction, lies and other acts that directly clash with the values Meyer touts publicly.

Despite the controversy that swirled around him during the 2018 season and previously while coach at Florida, Meyer will go down as one of the best and most influential coaches in college football history.

Meyer missed the Buckeyes first three games against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU as offensive coordinator Ryan Day took over the day-to-day coaching duties.

Meyer played collegiately at Cincinnati, spent two years as an unpaid graduate assistant at Ohio State, and worked 13 seasons as a salaried assistant at Illinois State, Colorado State, and Notre Dame.

Meyer is 186-32 as a college head coach at Ohio State, Florida, Utah and Bowling Green with three national championships and seven conference championships.

"I believe I will not coach again, Meyer said". Several Ohio State staff members told ESPN after the game that they noticed a positive change in Meyer the past two weeks.

He finished 82-9 at Ohio State with a 54-4 mark in Big Ten games. He also won two national titles as head coach of the Florida Gators from 2005 to 2010. After stepping down at Florida due to stress-related health concerns, he took the Ohio State job before the 2012 season after Jim Tressel was forced out for lying to the NCAA amid a memorabilia-for-tattoos scandal. It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native and success quickly followed. If doctors give him the clearance to return to coaching at the style he has to in order to get the necessary results, it's only a matter of time until Meyer is patrolling the sidelines again for a premier program in college football. He will be walking away with $38 million left on his contract.
