The grand jury's new indictment comes after deliberations and days of testimony from witnesses and Jean's family. The attorneys and family members didn't want a lower charge against Guyger just to improve odds in court.

Johnson also spoke about why it took her office two months to bring the case in front of a grand jury.

Guyger was initially charged with manslaughter, which is punishable up to 20 years of prison.

"It is such a hard thing to go through", said Betrum Jean, Botham's father.

The bond was re-instated after she was charged with murder, Leach said. "We take comfort at this result but we return to our island with much grief".

On Sept. 24, the Dallas Police Department fired Guyger. She supports restructuring the citizen review board, expanding bias training for officers and taking input from employees and the community.

"Finally, I would like to thank all our partners including clergy, community groups and businesses that continue to work with us as we protect and serve the residents of this great city".

Jean's family has filed a lawsuit against Guyger and the city of Dallas.

"Botham Jean was an incredible young man who was tragically taken from us too soon". Today's decision is another step on the long path toward justice for Botham. "Please continue to pray for the Jean family".

Amber Guyger, the former Texas police officer who killed her neighbor Botham Jean, has been indicted on a murder charge, according to the Dallas County district attorney's office.

An arrest affidavit prepared by the Texas Rangers provided a narrative of what allegedly happened the night Jean was killed.

Guyger told investigators she mistook Jean's apartment for her own and thought she'd encountered an intruder. So it shows she's messy. if you're saying the truth then you don't have to change all of the different narratives. the simple thing as the number of hours she worked that day, we have not gotten exactly how many hours she worked. Still in her uniform, Guyger parked her auto in the complex and walked to what she believed was her apartment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Jean lived in Apartment 1478, directly above Guyger's. According to the arrest affidavit, Guyger claimed Jean ignored "verbal commands" before she shot him.

Jean was not the first person shot by the former officer. She then drew her gun and fired, wounding Perez in the abdomen.

According to an affidavit filed against Perez, police were looking for a suspect when Guyger and another officer were called to assist a third officer. She turned on the lights while on the phone with 911, and only when asked for her address did she realize she was in the wrong apartment, she told police. She was arrested days after the September 6 shooting that killed her 26-year-old neighbour Botham Jean. Guyger was arrested September 9 on suspicion on manslaughter, and was released from the Kaufman County Jail after posting a $300,000 bond.
