He says Putin did not have an opportunity to respond to his remarks during the meeting of leaders. Russia's escalation has been met with worldwide condemnation.

German chancellor Angela Merkel aired her concerns with Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit over a blockade that targets Ukraine, then ripped Russian aggression at the gathering Saturday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he and U.S. President Donald Trump briefly discussed the recent naval confrontation in the Black Sea between Ukrainian and Russian naval ships.

Merkel said Germany had suggested - and Russian Federation agreed - that discussions about the dispute should continue at the advisor level in the four-way Normandy format that has sought to ease tensions between Ukraine and Russian Federation.

Trump had earlier canceled a bilateral meeting with Putin that was scheduled to take place during the summit in Argentina, citing Russia's ongoing detention of Ukrainian ships and sailors.

"The President wanted to send a clear, unambiguous message that we find that type of behavior unacceptable, so we canceled the meeting", Pompeo said. Thus, according to the Ukrainian side, Russian Federation has once again demonstrated its aggressive nature and complete disregard for the norms of worldwide law.

Trump had a brief face-to-face with Putin at dinner Friday night.

President Petro Poroshenko says Russian Federation has deployed a large number of troops along its border with Ukraine.

Far from offering comforting words, Putin said at a post-summit press conference he saw no end in sight to the four-year conflict in eastern Ukraine "as long as the current Ukrainian authorities remain in power".

The martial law order included a ban on entry to Ukraine of all Russian males aged 16 to 60, a move Poroshenko said is created to prevent undercover Russian military units from infiltrating the country.

A 2003 Russia-Ukraine agreement designates the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait as shared internal waters.

President Petro Poroshenko says Russian Federation has deployed "more than 80,000 troops, 1,400 artillery and multiple rocket launch systems, 900 tanks, 2,300 armored combat vehicles, 500 aircraft and 300 helicopters" along their border.

"Of course, we talked about the situation in the Sea of Azov, because it is important to avoid any aggravation", Merkel said in Buenos Aires.

According to a French aide, Friday's version entailed Putin drawing a map for Macron of the Kerch Strait, to buttress his position that the seized Ukrainian ships had intruded into Russian waters - a claim denied by Kiev.
