During the G20 summit, Trump met South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and agreed to stay firm in the application of sanctions on Pyongyang until it takes significant steps towards denuclearization.

"Through the one connected railway, the South and the North will prosper together and the ground for peace on the Korean Peninsula will be consolidated".

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly said on Saturday on his way back here that his second meeting with the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong Un, is likely to happen in January or February next year.

On board is a team of South Korean experts investigating ways to help North Korea modernise its rail network.

The engineers boarded the train in Dorasan, just north of Seoul, on Friday morning for the short journey to the Demilitarised Zone which has divided the Korean peninsula since the Korean War in the 1950s. From Dec. 8 to 17, the Koreas will inspect an 800-kilometre (497 mile) railway section along the country's eastern coast, stretching from an area near the scenic Diamond Mountain to a riverside station near the North's border with Russian Federation. The first will go through central North Korea and along the northwestern coast to the city of Sinuiju near the Chinese border. North Korea had been angered by Washington's refusal to ease sanctions and has warned it could resume development of its nuclear program if the United States did not drop its campaign. Seoul said it would discuss holding a ground-breaking ceremony before the end of the year, but that construction depended on the progress of North Korea's denuclearization.

The study comes as differences emerge between Seoul and Washington, which stations 28,500 troops in the South as part of their decades-old alliance.

Moon's top press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, was quoted by the South's Yonhap news agency saying that Trump "asked that South Korea and the USA closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula". Moon and Kim specifically agreed to hold a tape-cutting ceremony by the end of this year to mark the beginning of an inter-Korean project connecting roads and railways between the two countries.

Prospects for a second summit to overcome a current logjam in negotiations will likely depend on whether either the USA or DPRK can show flexibility with regards to offering gestures surrounding sanctions relief or steps towards denuclearization.
