Speaking from a G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Pompeo acknowledged that the humanitarian crisis in Yemen - where millions are at risk of starvation - had reached "epic proportions" but said Washington and Riyadh were offering aid.

Pompeo also said in the interview that the USA will continue to provide military support to the kingdom in the war in Yemen.

"We have no intention to damage the Saudi royal family or the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but revealing the truth about the murder with all its aspects and putting all whose responsible on a trial would benefit the Saudi Arabia as well", he said.

The president has said that the strategic relationship with Saudi Arabia and the benefit to the USA economy from Saudi arms purchases are too important to rupture over the killing of Khashoggi, which he has condemned.

Salman, who has been accused by the worldwide community of ordering the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and Putin, who has faced claims he ordered the nerve attack on Sergei Skripal in Britain, were pictured hand-in-hand during the second day in Buenos Aires.

Coming into the two-day meeting between the heads of state, it appeared that bin Salman would face widespread condemnation and isolation for his alleged involvement in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

On Saturday, Trudeau also sat down separately with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

The Crown Prince also told associates in August a year ago that if he failed to persuade Khashoggi to return to Saudi Arabia, "we could possibly lure him outside Saudi Arabia and make arrangements" - a communication the Central Intelligence Agency said "seems to foreshadow the Saudi operation launched against Khashoggi".

Despite the findings, the report also said: "To be clear, we lack direct reporting of the Crown Prince issuing a kill order".

Earlier this month, the United States imposed its own sanctions on Saudi officials for the same reason.

Canada has been outspoken on human rights in Saudi Arabia, which has retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations and vowing to end trade.

"We suggest renaming the street address of the Saudi Embassy into Jamal Khashoggi Way to be a daily reminder to Saudi officials" that such killings are "totally unacceptable and as an expression of Washington's unstinting support for freedom of the press", the petition states.

The Turkish president said Turkey had evidence that Khashoggi had been killed over the course of seven and a half minutes and had shared the evidence with those countries who had asked for it.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting the Central Intelligence Agency assessment, said Saturday that Prince Mohammed sent at least 11 messages in the hours before the killing to a close adviser charged with overseeing the murder.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Mohammed later exchanged a high-five and a handshake and laughed heartily as they took seats next to each other in the main meeting room.

Analysts had been touting a Russia-Saudi deal ahead of talks next week in Vienna of the Opec oil cartel, as global crude prices have been slumping.
