"Along with his full life of service to country, we will remember President Bush for his devotion to family - especially the love of his life, Barbara". "While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude", former president Barack Obama said in a statement.

The World War II hero died late Friday night local time.

He also served as a congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice-president.

"Not merely for the years he spent as our forty-first President, but for the more than 70 years he spent in devoted service to the country he loved - from a decorated Naval aviator who almost gave his life in World War II, to commander-in-chief of our Armed Forces, with plenty of posts along the way".

Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993.

Bush, the 41st president of the United States, lived longer than any of his predecessors.

He Graduated in 1948 with a degree in economics (Yale University).

In the wake of former President George H.W. Bush's death, many people reached out to express their condolences.

He had joined politics in 1964 after starting a Texan oil business and becoming a millionaire by the age of 40.

Thousands of USA troops were sent into Panama and the country's leader, Manuel Noriega, was arrested on drug trafficking charges and extradited to the U.S. to face trial. He was an equal ally of former election foe President Bill Clinton in helping victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma through the One America Appeal.

He joined Clinton to raise funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2010 Haiti quake.

Another son, Jeb - a former Florida governor - made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination in 2016.
