  • Met Office issue yellow weather warning as Dorset prepares to be hit by Storm Diana

As part of the yellow warning, the Met Office said large waves would pose a "danger to life" along coastal areas in south-west England and Wales on Thursday.

The winds will be strongest at 9am today when wind speed will reach 52mph, according to the forecast, they will then tail off throughout the morning down to 31mph at 3pm.

"This will lead to a risk of flooding from surface water in the afternoon and evening of Wednesday and from watercourses from Wednesday evening into Thursday".

Mr Miles added: "Anyone in the United Kingdom can expect to see wind and rain over the next few days".

With Storm Diane initially expected to skirt past the region up the west coast, an updated post on Wednesday night placed a Yellow Warning across the majority of Yorkshire.

Powerful winds topping 85 km/h will blast all of Ireland as well as Scotland, Wales, southeast England and northern England during the day on Wednesday. If you have travel plans, through the rush hour for example, there could well be some issues.

The adverse weather conditions caused ferry journeys between Portsmouth and the Channel Islands to be cancelled.

"There is a strong likelihood of severe weather orange warning for this particular event", she said.

Thursday will be cool and blustery with a mix of bright spells and occasional showers. Highest temperatures 8 to 12 degrees. The north and east will begin dry, but rain elsewhere will quickly spread countrywide along with low cloud and mist. Southwest winds will be strong with further gale gusts. Lowest temperatures 4 to 8 C. With that, there will be some heavy bursts of rain. The strong southerly winds will veer southwesterly later.
