  • Three US service members killed in Afghanistan

Resolute Support, the NATO-led mission to Afghanistan, announced three US service members were killed by an improvised explosive device on Tuesday.

The incident took place on 27 November, Resolute Support, the official name of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission, said in a statement.

One U.S. contractor was also wounded in the blast. "The wounded service members and contractor were evacuated and are receiving medical care".

No other details about the deadly incident were available.

Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the attack in the city of Ghazni, where US forces have waged fierce battles against the Taliban for months.

The casualties came after another USA soldier was killed in the southwestern province of Nimroz on November 24.

The Taliban claimed the attack, saying a US tank was completely destroyed.

Separately, the military said Tuesday that a preliminary review has found that an Afghan commando likely accidentally shot a U.S. Army Ranger on Saturday during a raid on a compound in a remote part of the country.

Early interviews indicate the tragic accident occurred when the partnered force became engaged in a close-quarter battle during an assault on one of multiple barricaded al Qaeda shooters, the statement said.

USA envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is spearheading efforts to strike a peace deal with the Taliban before Afghanistan's presidential election, scheduled for April next year.

The US, alongside with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has been present in Afghanistan in the form of the Resolute Support Mission.

"Sgt. Jasso was killed defending our nation, fighting al Qaeda alongside our Afghan partners", he added. While in Afghanistan, CBS News joined USA troops in an operation to clear an area of ISIS fighters. Brent Taylor of the Utah National Guard was killed in an "insider attack" by a rogue Afghan commando he was training in Kabul.

Global forces have also suffered from so-called insider attacks in recent months, in which Afghan soldiers or police have opened fire on them.
