Two nooses were found hanging outside the Mississippi State Capitol on Monday alongside signs decrying the state's history of lynching, state police said.

Chuck McIntosh, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, which oversees the state capitol building, said the nooses and signs were found shortly before 8am on Monday on the south side of the site in central Jackson.

The troubling discovery comes the day before a runoff election between Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy is set to take place. Tuesday's victor will serve the last two years of Cochran's six-year term.

Trump daughter-in-law and senior adviser to President Trump's 2020 campaign Lara Trump on Monday defended Sen. One sign says MS needs a senator "who respects the lives of lynch victims".

At a midday event, before the content of the signs was disclosed, Espy said he knew nothing about the nooses or signs.

"She produces like few produce", Trump said. "We need someone who respects lives of lynching victims", one sign read.

Hyde-Smith apologized "to anyone that was offended" by the comment, which she intended as an "exaggerated expression of regard" for a local rancher who invited her to speak.

Espy is seeking to become the first African-American U.S. senator from MS since Reconstruction. Swennumson was always planning to vote for Espy, but felt more certain about her decision after Hyde-Smith's "public hanging" comment.

MS has a history of racially motivated lynchings.

Hyde-Smith, a former state agriculture and commerce commissioner who was appointed to succeed ailing GOP Senator Thad Cochran, is portraying the race as a battle of ideologies in her final appeal to voters in the ruby-red state. It says MS had 581 during that time, the highest number of any state.

"If Espy wins that race, it represents a huge breakthrough for America", said the Reverend Jesse Jackson, a longtime civil rights activist and former Democratic presidential candidate.

27, thousands of Mississippians will vote for a senator.

A video of Ms Hyde-Smith apparently encouraging voter suppression also emerged on Twitter. His campaign spokesman, Danny Blanton, said Hyde-Smith's "toxic comments are scaring away the kind of investments our state needs to move forward" and costing MS jobs.

When a lobbyist who works for MLB could not attend a fundraiser put on by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in mid-November, the league was asked instead to donate money to Hyde-Smith, according to sources.
