Which makes the news that broke last night rather surprising: the MLB PAC donated the legal maximum - $5,000 - to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith from MS ahead of her special runoff election against Democrat Mike Espy.

"I am honored to have President Trump's endorsement", she said as the two appeared at a chilly outdoor rally at the airport in the northeastern city of Tupelo, best known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

Hyde-Smith, who's running against Democrat Mike Espy, an African-American, in Tuesday's run off election, set off a firestorm of controversy earlier this month when her hanging comments were revealed. MLB's comment provided no explanation as to why the donation was made after Hyde-Smith's comments, and when exactly Major League Baseball chose to ask for it back.

Of course, children can't control where their parents send them to school, but Hyde-Smith apparently didn't learn from her parents' mistakes. In the heavily Republican state, Hyde-Smith had always been seen as the prohibitive favorite in the race.

Over weekend, Major League Baseball created a firestorm of controversy for itself when it made a $5,000 donation - the maximum donation allowed under the law - to MS senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.

The special election victor will serve the final two years of Cochran's term.

While Hyde-Smith has taken a brazenly conservative stance on most issues, Espy has also played up his willingness to work with conservatives, and hasn't promoted some of the more left-leaning policies of his party, such as open borders and Medicare for all.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are not going back", Espy told supporters, criticizing Hyde-Smith's apology for the hanging remarks. Thad Cochran, who resigned in April because of health problems. Former Vice President Joe Biden has endorsed Espy, and three Democrats who could run for president in 2020 - Sens. Her campaign said the remark about voting was a joke.

Espy, who was USA agriculture secretary under Bill Clinton, spoke on Saturday about how he and his twin sister were among 17 black students who integrated the all-white Yazoo City high school in 1969, graduating in 1971. The same progressive blogger who published the video later published one in which she told a small group at Mississippi State University that suppressing the votes of students at other colleges was "a great thing".

For Espy, turnout is key. MS last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 1982. She supports Trump's tax cuts, and believes in eliminating "burdensome" federal regulations to aid businesses.

Trump defended Hyde-Smith Monday. He noted during a campaign stop earlier Monday that he had crossed the "party chasm" to endorse the re-election of Republican Gov. Haley Barbour in MS in 2007. Trump said she made it somewhat "in jest" and that she felt bad about it. Walmart, Pfizer, AT&T, Boston Scientific, Union Pacific, and Leidos also asked for Hyde-Smith to return campaign contributions.
