Fire crews are working to fight that blaze, along with another large wildfire in Southern California, where at least two deaths have been reported.
As firefighters make progress in containing a Northern California wildfire that has become the deadliest in the state's recorded history, high winds are expected to fan the flames of another major fire burning further south.
Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said Monday that search teams were using "cadaver dogs" to look for fire victims and two temporary military morgues were being set up.
The Woolsey Fire, which also began on Thursday, has razed 38,976 hectares and has been 35 per cent contained.
The sheriff said he also has requested three portable morgue teams from the USA military, a "disaster mortuary" crew and an unspecified number of cadaver dog units to assist in the search for human remains.
North Valley Animal Disaster Group has received about 5,000 calls for help since Thursday. However, in cases in which missing people are not found alive, he said relatives may be asked to provide a DNA sample to help authorities identify the remains. Of those cases, 231 individuals had turned up safe, he said.
The death toll rose to 48 people on Tuesday as the most devastating fire in California's history raged on.
Residents have recounted harrowing tales of fleeing the fires on foot with little more than the clothes on their backs.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fires.
The fire, on its fifth day Monday, has burned at least 85,500 acres and was 15 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.
The Woolsey Fire on the southern end of the state has devoured mansions and mobile homes alike in the coastal town of Malibu.
Full information about evacuations and road closures is listed on the Cal Fire pages for the Camp fire and the Woolsey fire.
The massive Camp Fire continues to blaze through northern California, sweeping through neighborhoods since it began on November 8.
Some evacuees in Malibu, a seaside community whose residents include a number of Hollywood celebrities, were allowed to return home but were left without power or cellphone service.
Humans are not the only species affected by the deadly wildfires.
