Similar action has been taken in other states with signature match laws, most notably Georgia.

Florida's Senate race was thrown into chaos on Thursday night when Scott, without providing evidence, accused "unethical liberals" of attempting to "steal this election".

Department spokeswoman Gretl Pelssinger said Friday that the agency is working with the Department of State and will investigate any allegations of elections fraud, but right now there are no such allegations. A recount would be automatically triggered if the candidates are within 0.5 points of each other and the machine recount would need to be completed by 3 p.m. on November 15.

"I was more just out of curiosity looking at all these close elections and frustrated by the results", Murphy said. While the local races were all situated elsewhere on the ballot, only Senate and U.S. House of Representatives were located below the instructions, and in one district where there was no race for rep, the Senate race was the only one below the instructions.

In the case of Florida still counting ballots more than 48 hours after polls closed, David Becker, the executive director for the Center for Election Innovation and Research, told NPR it is extremely common for a voting jurisdiction to be taking as long as Broward County is.

Neither the Associated Press nor CNN have called the race. Florida's secretary of state will verify the first unofficial count Saturday.

But by Thursday, he said, the number had increased to 712,840 ballots cast on Election Day.

Many could be heard chanting, "Lock her up!" and "Bye bye, Brenda!" referencing Broward's supervisor of elections, Dr. Brenda Snipes, as they demanded election results.

"The lead is just over 15,000 votes now, which seemed to cause the governor to hold an impromptu news conference to acknowledge the shrinking state of the margin", Elias said. "I won't stand for anyone using his position to undermine our democratic process and neither should the people of Florida".

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson has not conceded to his Republican challenger, Gov. Rick Scott, though Scott declared victory on Tuesday night. He's asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate.

"Mayor Gillum conceded on Election Day and now Broward County has put him 'back into play.' Bill Nelson conceded Election - now he's back in play!?"

Republicans are charging that elections officials in the two counties have a record of "incompetence and irregularities in vote tabulations" and pointing to a recent court ruling that Brenda Snipes, the Broward County elections supervisor, oversaw the illegal destruction of votes in a 2016 congressional contest. Keys Republicans have a history of prioritizing conservationist policies, and some blame Scott for the declining health of Florida Bay's backcountry and the red-tide algae bloom that plagued the southwest coast this summer.

Scott also said Palm Beach County officials refused to provide information on the ballot count, and were illegally denying party officials access to the ballot counting areas.

The Florida Governor's race between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum also appeared headed for an automatic recount. DeSantis led Gillum by 0.47 percentage point as of Thursday afternoon.

By law, any race with a lead of 0.5 percent or less triggers a mandatory machine recount.

In Florida, there are tight high-profile races for governor and the Senate, while in Georgia there is a thin-margin gubernatorial contest.
