History is made in some Mid-term races around the country

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 29 is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress

Her win beats the previous record held by Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik, a former White House aide to president George W. Bush who was first elected to an upstate NY constituency in 2014 aged 30.

With black candidates in several high-profile races - including gubernatorial candidates Andrew Gillum of Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia - voters nationally said by 71-24 percent it's important to elect more racial and ethnic minorities to public office and 44 percent say it's very important.

Tlaib ran unopposed in her race to represent Michigan's 17th district and has become the nation's first Palestinian-American woman in Congress, and one of two Muslim women elected on Tuesday.

The victories by the two Democrats - Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib - came on an election night when members of multiple minority groups had a chance to score electoral firsts. Meanwhile the Arizona senate race is too close to call, but either Republican or Democrat, the victor will be the state's first woman in the seat.

The first Native American women have also been elected to Congress, with Democrats Deb Haaland winning in New Mexico and Sharice Davids in Kansas.

She was also a volunteer in Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign.

Here are the key trailblazing candidates who are diversifying American politics and have already won their races so far.

Ocasio-Cortez, who graduated from Boston University with degrees in global relations and economics, is a former organizer for Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign and a former staffer for the late Sen. About six in 10 voted for the Democrat, compared with four in 10 for the Republican. This year, women tied the record for most governor's seats women have ever held - nine - a number that was previously reached in 2004 and 2007. Underwood texted Stevens after she won her August primary (she also reminded her to clear her voicemail because it would fill up quickly.) "Keep fighting".

A record number of women were elected to the US House on Tuesday, almost two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

Women won more seats than ever before in the US House after a record number of female candidates were on ballots across the country, fueled by Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump. Republican women like Kristi L. Noem and Marsha Blackburn, on the other hand, made history but were reluctant to mention their gender on the campaign trail, preferring to focus on issues.

As of early Wednesday morning, 96 women were being projected to win House races, with 31 women newly elected to the House and 65 female incumbents.

The "women's wave" included MA, where Democrat Ayanna Pressley was elected by Seventh District voters to be the first African-American woman to represent the state as a House member.

"Nothing is more wholesome for our country, for our politics, for our campaigning than the increased participation of women in the electoral process", Nancy Pelosi, who's on track to be Democrats' pick for speaker of the House, said last month on CNN.
