Trump says 'I don't care' if Democrats go after my taxes

A Democratic-held House would also be a more receptive audience if special counsel Robert Mueller finds wrongdoing by the President and his campaign involving Russian election meddling, and theoretically would give Trump's congressional opponents the power to initiative impeachment proceedings. And Trump's approval rating is hovering at or below 40 per cent, the lowest of any president on the eve of his first midterms since the 1950s. The GOP's grip on high-profile governorships in Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin were at risk as well. It sounds like a tall task, but even the president admits history is on the side of the Democrats.

Almost 40 per cent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate, while about 25 per cent said they voted to express support for Trump.

Democrats' fate depends upon a delicate coalition of infrequent voters - particularly young people and minorities - who traditionally shun midterm elections.

Democrats had a slight early turnout edge heading into Election Day, but Republicans stormed the polls a little hard than Democrats.

And they appear particularly motivated to vote.

Meanwhile, some Democrat supporters admitted they were haunted by the spectre of 2016 when Mr Trump's triumph confounded the pundits and opinion polls which had predicted a Hillary Clinton victory. NBC, owned by Comcast Corp, said on Monday it was no longer running the ad, which it called "insensitive".

Voters must decide on Tuesday whether to constrain President Donald Trump and his compliant Republicans after the first two years of a demagogic presidency that widened national divides and unfolded in a torrent of scandal.

He bet big on a xenophobic closing message, warning of an immigrant "invasion" that promised to spread violent crime and drugs across the nation.

Tuesday's elections, widely seen as a referendum on Trump, have been portrayed by both Republicans and Democrats as critical for the direction of the country.

Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats to take control of the House.

Republicans are expected to retain their slight majority in the US Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve US Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes. News organizations use them to help call the results of races. Bob Menendez, who, less than a year ago, stood trial for federal corruption charges. On Saturday, the often-cited Real Clear Politics "Battle for the House 2018" poll had Democrats ahead by 203 to 196.

In Virginia, political newcomer Jennifer Wexton defeated two-term GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock.

Monday will be a barnstormer for Trump, who will make stops in OH and in before a final campaign pitch in Missouri, where he is trying to knock Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill out of office.

In south Florida, former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala defeated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar.

Republicans do not have to defend as many vulnerable incumbents as Democrats in the midterms. A party needs 218 seats to have a majority. But 35 Senate seats, all 435 House seats, 36 gubernatorial positions, and hundreds of other state- and local-level positions are up for grabs in what is seen as a particularly consequential election, already drawing a record turnout in early voting.

Reprising his frantic campaigning during the final days of his 2016 race, Trump was barnstorming the country with rallies in Ohio, Indiana and Missouri, returning to the White House well after midnight.

He and the first lady were to host an evening watch party for family and friends.

That key demographic split evenly - 43-41 percent -among Democratic and Republican House candidates in the survey, erasing a 33-point Democrat lead in October.

O'Connell said "Democrats are going to launch many investigations and launch many subpoenas" if they control the House.

The political and practical stakes were sky-high.

In midterm elections two years after he won the White House, Trump and his fellow Republicans on Tuesday were set to maintain their majority in the US Senate, CNN, NBC and ABC News said, following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues. Perhaps more important, they would claim subpoena power to investigate Trump's personal and professional shortcomings.
