How To Interpret The Early Exit Poll Results

  • President Donald Trump arrives for a rally at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum

The first national elections since Trump captured the White House in a stunning 2016 upset will be a referendum on the polarizing Republican president and his hardline policies, and a test of whether Democrats can turn the energy of the liberal anti-Trump resistance into victories at the ballot box.

Republicans are expected to retain their majority in the Senate, where 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs. Yet it may be effective in largely rural states where he remains popular and where numerous closest Senate races are playing out.

Trump has spent months ahead of the midterms deriding the Democrats as bent on destroying the United States economy and allowing criminals to run riot. The Florida Senate race between Democrat Bill Nelson and Republican Rick Scott remained deadlocked.

Analysts expect pressure on stocks if Democrats gain control of the House and a sharper downward reaction if they take the Senate too.

Voting will close in another 18 states at 8pm.

The earliest results in the nation will come in from in and Eastern Kentucky.

Former vice president Joe Biden, often touted as a possible Democratic candidate to take on Trump in 2020, said he'd be "dumbfounded" not to win the House.

Democrats are favored by election forecasters to pick up the minimum of 23 House seats they need for a majority.

USA citizens will vote to select their preferred members of Congress, both for the House of Representatives and for the Senate, as well as state Governors and down-ballot positions such as local representatives and judges. "Certainly we feel good about where things are headed".

The expectation is that Democrats will bring a new level of oversight and investigation of the Trump administration, but numerous candidates ran on issues like healthcare and immigration.

"Mr. President, here we come", she said to loud cheers.

Polls are also closed in parts of in, where Democrat Joe Donnelly, a top target of the President's frenetic final midterm election campaign swing, is fighting an uphill battle for re-election against Republican Mike Braun.

Since Donald Trump entered politics the Democrats have struggled to compete.

After a hectic week of campaigning, Trump spent Tuesday at the White House awaiting exit polls and final results. "I remember coming out of the White House one day in August and realizing it was the first time I'd been outside when the sun was still up in a long time", said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane, who worked in the Clinton administration during the Whitewater scandal.

"After further review we recognize the insensitive nature of the ad and have made a decision to cease airing it across our properties as soon as possible", a spokesperson for the network said in a email. Four in 10 said they cast a vote to oppose him.

Democrats in the House could be banking on launching an investigation using the results of U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's already 18-month-old probe of allegations of Russian interference on Trump's behalf in the 2016 presidential election.

The Democrats picked up at least a dozen Republican-held House seats across nearly all regions of the country as returns were still coming in Tuesday but fell short in some closely watched races as they fought to wrest control of the chamber from the GOP. If Democrats are on fire, this is also the hour when the bottom could fall out for Republicans, and the House majority could be called.

Mr Trump also could face more pushback from Democrats on trade tariffs he has introduced, particularly in farm states hard hit by retaliatory measures from China or manufacturing states hit by higher steel and aluminium prices.

Just weeks before the vote, a Trump supporter allegedly shipped pipe bombs to some of the president's most prominent critics, among them former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros.

"This is the single most important off-year election of my lifetime". "So I think it's much more local than what we all talk about". My whole life, you know what I say?

The Democratic gains were fueled by women, young and Hispanic voters, a Reuters/Ipsos Election Day poll found. Fifty-five percent of women said they backed a Democrat for the House this year, compared to 49 percent in the 2014 midterm congressional election.
